How to map areas and locations
Create clear work zones before adding assets
Use the polygon tool to create areas that reflect real work zones. This ensures assets are correctly tagged and makes team tasks easier.
Who is this for?
-
Role: Office staff, field leads
-
Platform: Web
-
When: Onboarding
Before you start
-
Make sure you can access the Map menu in Civic.ly.
-
Agree naming conventions with your team before creating areas.
Steps
-
Open the Map menu — switch to the right map view.
-
Web: Change the base layer to Ordnance Survey or satellite imagery if you need more clarify
-
-
Draw boundaries with the polygon tool — outline logical work zones.
-
Example: split a park into “Memorial Park - Playground” and “Memorial Park - Playground - Main Park”
-
-
Name the area consistently — match everyday team vocabulary.
-
Example: if staff say “Stone Castle Upper Park” when referring to areas, use that name.
-
-
Set the area type — select the asset type (e.g., park, pond, sports field, building).
-
Copy the area name into Location Tag — critical step so that assets inherit this tag automatically.
-
Finish — save your areas. They now appear on the map and will tag assets automatically.
Notes & limits
-
Use polygon tool, not line tool, to create proper areas.
-
If you are creating multiple overlapping areas, create the small areas within the main area first, then finally draw the overarching area
- Assets falling in multiple overlapping areas are assigned to the smallest area by footprint.
-
Areas must be set before uploading asset photos, otherwise you’ll need to assign location tags manually.
Verify it worked
-
Upload a test photo with GPS data inside one area.
-
Run AI detection.
-
The asset should automatically inherit the area’s location tag.
